Since the New York Giants have been around, they have had the top defenses. Prior to the 2016 season, the defense did take a bit of a slide. Then during the off-season leading into the 2016 season, the Giants spent close to $200 million to help revamp the defense. They brought in players like Janoris Jenkins, Oliver Vernon, and others. The Giants did see a turnaround with their defense that saw the team win eleven games in 2016.
I want to first look at the defensive line. My first glance at it is that it looks very good. You pretty much have the same core of players coming back again with Jason Pierre Paul, Olivier Vernon, and Damon Harrison. One thing we saw big time with the New York Giants defense was that they were able to put pressure on the opposing quarterback. We saw Vernon and Pierre Paul combine for 13.5 sack. One could only imagine what year 2 could be with those two. The biggest addition that they made to their defensive line was adding Dalvin Tomlinson from Alabama. Alabama is always having one of the top defensive lines in the SEC, so I should expect him to be a major presence on that line.
Now if you look at the linebacking corps, there is where it looks to be interesting. The linebacking corps is led by nine-year veteran Jonathan Casillas who they will look to as the leader this season. I also suspect that if Mark Herzlich is able to stay healthy, then I could see him having a good season.
Lastly, I want to look at the remaining defense group, the defensive backs. Personally, I feel that the Giants saw their biggest help come from this area with the likes Janoris Jenkins, Landon Collins, and Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie.
Overall, the New York Giants had a rather decent defense in 2016 and I do not suspect anything less in 2017. If they can stay healthy, I do not see why they cannot be within the top five of the league.
