When the #17 Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves take the field on Saturday, they will do so in their biggest game through five weeks. They will take on the #8 Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. If this game were a boxing match, they would title it “Battle for RMAC Supremacy”! What does the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves have to do to continue their winning streak? Here are the three keys.
- Keep it close early
Both of these teams like to come out fast and score often. However, for the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves, the key will be the third quarter. CMU has only given up 14 points through five games in the third. On the other side, the Pack has only allowed six third-quarter points. Therefore, if CSU-Pueblo can keep it close in the first half. They should be able to use their second-half muscle to take control. Especially in the fourth quarter. Opponents are outscoring CMU 56-17 in the final frame.
The CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves are ranked 18th nationally in DII on defense. They are going to need every bit of that on Saturday. Mesa is ranked 13th in the nation in total offense. Their QB, Eystin Salum, is ranked 11th in the nation in DII. The CMU offense is going to put the Pack defense to the test early and often. This matchup will be a fun one to watch all afternoon.
We all know about the validity of the CSU-Pueblo running game. However, this game could fall on the arm of Sr. QB, Rex Dausin. Dausin took over in the second half of the South Dakota game when Jr starter Brandon Edwards was injured. His first start last week at NMHU was not picture perfect. Although at times, Dausin looked very comfortable and was on target.
Dausin will need to step up and be a senior leader for this team. This is a prime game to do it in. A big stage and a conference game is just the place to do it. Bring your gun to the fight, big boy, you just might need it!
The CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves return home for the first time in three weeks. The fans at the ThunderBowl should be ready to see an epic Division II College Football Battle. Get ready for a classic.
